Dr. Dinesh Bhurani: Hemato-Oncology & BMT Expert
When you sit down with Dr. Dinesh Bhurani, you get the feeling immediately that you're sitting down with someone who knows how to keep hope alive for patients and families. With more than three decades of medical practice, Dr. Bhurani has established a name in Clinical Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplants that is not easy to ignore.
Specialization: Clinical Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation
Dr. Bhurani specializes in a wide but highly expert field. He is a Pediatrician, a Hematologic Oncologist, and a Hematologist combined.
He specializes specifically in Bone Marrow Transplants, a very tricky procedure that requires finesse, caution, and years of practice. Dr. Bhurani has so far done over 250 stem cell transplants, a figure that reflects his dedication and expertise.

Services and Contributions
Dr. Bhurani has been heading the Hemato-Oncology Services and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre, New Delhi, since 2007. In this unit, he works with a team that treats some of the most complex cases of blood cancers such as lymphoma, myeloma, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).
He does not only treat patients. He also adds to the pool of knowledge. Dr. Bhurani has been a Principal Investigator on numerous clinical trials in lymphoma, myeloma, and CLL, and co-investigated numerous other studies in Medical Oncology. His research provides patients with access to treatment that is in accordance with international standards.
Education: Learning from the Best
Dr. Bhurani’s medical journey shows that good doctors never stop learning. He completed his DM in Clinical Haematology at the prestigious Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore — an institution known for rigorous training and high standards.
After his DM, he spent over three years in Australia, earning the Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA) title. His time in Australia included training and practice at:
- The Royal Melbourne Hospital
- Austin Hospital, Melbourne
- West Sydney Area Health Service
Dr. Bhurani was also a Consultant at CMC Vellore and then an Associate Consultant at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. This wide experience provided him with international best practices that he now applies to his patients in India.
A Strong Commitment to Teaching and Research
Outside of the clinic and operation theatre, Dr. Bhurani also invests in the future. He oversees students of DNB and has been a co-supervisor to PhD and MSc students. He is also an active member of the Indian Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, an organisation that unites professionals who strive to advance blood disorder treatments in India.
As he explains, "Research and teaching keep you humble. They remind you that you're always a student, no matter how many years you've been a doctor."

32 years of experience, 25 years of them as a specialist, are all the recommendations required. But beyond statistics, colleagues commonly report his serene temperament and patient-focused methodology. Patients tell him that he listens first and explains in plain language.
